8:00 AM – Breakfast at Haji Café

Start your day with an authentic taste of Bahrain at Haji Café, a beloved café in the heart of the Manama Souq. This local favorite is well-known for its traditional Bahraini breakfast. It is a great spot to learn about the island’s culinary traditions. The menu includes local favorites such as balaleet (sweet vermicelli with eggs), khabisah (a fragrant, spicy dessert), and other delicious options like samboosa (a traditional Arabic pastry) and harees (a hearty porridge).

Because of its location in the lively souq area, the restaurant is surrounded by history and culture, with the sights and sounds of old Bahrain all around. The café’s setting is perfect for people-watching while sipping on some karak tea.

9:30 AM – Visit the Bahrain National Museum

Entrance Fee: 1 BHD (around USD 2.65)

After enjoying your delicious Bahraini breakfast, it’s time to visit the island’s rich history at the Bahrain National Museum. Located on the waterfront, the Museum is a must-see for anyone wanting to learn more about the island. Your Instagram feed will thank you for the stunning modern architecture and outdoor sculpture photo ops!

The Museum’s clean, minimalist design is deceiving. At first, you might think the exhibits are few and far between (I was a little confused myself), but once you get your bearings, there’s so much to discover. One of the first things you’ll notice is the vast floor map of Bahrain—a stunning piece that puts the island’s layout into perspective.

The various exhibits explain Bahrain’s history, starting with the ancient Dilmun civilization and ending with modern-day traditions. Visitors learn archeology, art, and Bahraini culture, with artifacts ranging from pottery and tools to beautifully preserved ancient scripts.

It’s not just about looking at old stuff, though—the displays make it easy to connect with the story of Bahrain’s past. Plus, it’s all housed in a very comfortable, air-conditioned space, which is a blessing in the Bahraini heat.

Head to the Museum café for a quick recharge. It’s cozy, and the prices are reasonable—perfect for taking a breather before you continue your adventure.

Before you leave, don’t forget to check out the outdoor sculpture garden—it’s a fantastic spot for some last-minute photos with the sea and skyline in the background.

11:00 AM – Explore the Bahrain Fort (Qal’at al-Bahrain)

Next, go to the Bahrain Fort (Qal’at al-Bahrain). This UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-see for anyone visiting the island. This spot offers a glimpse into Bahrain’s fascinating past in just a short visit.

The fort sits on an ancient archeological mound, with ruins dating back thousands of years. This gives you a sense of the island’s rich history, especially that of the Dilmun civilization.

While the fort itself isn’t massive, it’s incredibly easy to walk around and doesn’t require any fancy footwear—you can actually do it in sandals, no problem! The layout is simple to navigate and a great way to stretch your legs while soaking up the historic atmosphere. As you wander through the well-preserved ruins, take in the stunning views of the surrounding area, especially the sea, which makes for some fantastic photos. You can even walk around outside the fort for more scenic shots with the sea as your backdrop.

If you have more time, explore the on-site Museum. The small Museum is packed with information and artifacts that help bring the site to life. Plus, there’s a cozy café where you can grab a drink, cool off, and clean restrooms for a short pit stop before heading out on your 24 hours in Bahrain itinerary.

12:30 PM – Stroll Through Manama Souq

Of course, no trip to Bahrain is complete without a visit to the Manama Souq. Located in the city’s heart, this bustling marketplace is the perfect spot for an afternoon stroll and the best place for serious treasure hunting. Stretching out from the iconic Bab Al Bahrain, the souq is a maze of narrow streets and alleyways packed with shops and stalls selling everything from spices and pearls to electronics.

You might also notice shisha pipes available for purchase. Shisha, also known as hookah, is a water pipe used for smoking flavored tobacco. It’s a popular social activity in many Middle Eastern countries. The beautifully crafted pipes come in various designs, making them great decorative pieces even if you don’t smoke.

Walking around the bustling souq, you’ll get a taste of old-world Bahrain. The market still has the feel of a traditional Arabian souq, with the sights, sounds, and smells of everyday life all around you.

Bargaining is the norm here, so don’t hesitate to negotiate prices—it’s all part of the experience! Stop by one of the local cafés for a quick refreshment; a chilled glass of fresh juice or a cup of karak tea is just the thing to keep you energized while exploring the market.

If you’re a foodie, stock up on spices like saffron, cardamom, and sumac, which make perfect (and fragrant) souvenirs. And if you’re in the mood for something a bit more glamorous, you’ll find Bahrain’s famous pearls, too.

1:30 PM – Lunch at La Fontaine

After exploring Manama Souq, make your way to La Fontaine, a charming dining spot nearby. This restaurant beautifully combines art and cuisine, providing a unique dining experience.

Try Machboos, a traditional Bahraini spiced rice dish typically served with chicken or lamb. If you’re in the mood for seafood, you can’t go wrong with the fresh catch from the Persian Gulf—perfectly grilled or served with a tangy lemon sauce.

The ambiance at La Fontaine is perfect for a leisurely lunch, so take your time to relax and enjoy the artwork that decorates the restaurant.

3:00 PM – Visit the Al-Fateh Grand Mosque

After lunch, visit the Al-Fateh Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world. The impressive large fiberglass dome and beautiful calligraphy on the walls are a real sight to see!

The iconic Al Fateh Grand Mosque offers free guided tours, a great way to learn about Bahrain’s culture and religion. Once you arrive, you’ll need to wear an abaya (for women) or dress modestly. Don’t worry if you forget; they provide lovely abayas for women to wear. If you’re uncomfortable with the dress code or the customs, you might want to plan another activity.

The tours are led by enthusiastic volunteers who love sharing their knowledge about Islam and the mosque. Be prepared for a good amount of the tour to cover the basics of Islam and Muslim prayers. The 30-minute presentation explains how the mosque was built and its importance to the community.

4:30 PM – Explore Bahrain Bay

After visiting the mosque, stroll around Bahrain Bay, a modern waterfront development. The skyline views are awe-inspiring, making this area a photographer’s dream. You’ll want to snap some pictures of the futuristic architecture, including its stunning sails, innovative design, and iconic Bahrain World Trade Center.

Bahrain Bay is divided into three areas: The Wharf, The Gardens, and The Park. The Wharf is perfect for grabbing a coffee or a bite to eat while enjoying the waterfront views. The Gardens is an oasis of greenery, great for a relaxing walk among beautiful landscapes. And don’t miss The Park, where you can enjoy outdoor activities or unwind by the water.

Does anyone else watch Netflix’s Drive to Survive?

6:00 PM – Tour the Bahrain International Circuit

If you’re a motorsports fan, take a quick drive to the Bahrain International Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix. Bahrain was the first country in the region to host a Formula 1 race back in 2004, and the circuit has since been the stage for some truly unforgettable F1 moments. From the dramatic duel in the desert in 2014 to the heart-pounding season opener in 2021, this circuit is famous for delivering electrifying races.

While you may not be able to catch a live race as part of your 24 hours in Bahrain itinerary, the circuit offers tours of the facilities where you can explore behind the scenes of this world-class venue. For some extra thrill, why not try karting on the track where racing legends have competed? It’s a fun way to get a feel for the thrill of motorsports, even if you’re not behind the wheel of an F1 car.

If you plan to visit again next year, grab early bird tickets for the Bahrain Grand Prix as soon as they’re available. Even without the adrenaline of race day, the BIC is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of Bahrain’s passion for motorsports.

7:30 PM – Dinner at CUT by Wolfgang Puck

For your last meal in Bahrain, visit CUT by Wolfgang Puck at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.

The sleek, modern design of the restaurant, combined with its warm ambiance, creates the perfect setting for a memorable evening. Bahrain Bay’s views are breathtaking, especially as the sun sets. If you’re into wine, you’ll love their extensive list of premium international selections, which pair beautifully with the food.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert—the signature cheesecake or the molten chocolate cake are favorites!

Things to Know Before Visiting Bahrain

Do you need a visa to visit?

Always check your country’s requirements, but generally, you will need a visa to visit Bahrain. The good news is that you can get a visa upon landing at the Bahrain International Airport at immigration. You will need proof of where you are staying and of outgoing flights.

When is the best time to visit?

I always joke that the best time to visit is when you have time. To avoid the hottest months, visitors should plan on visiting from November to March. A sweatshirt was enough to make me comfortable. If possible, avoid July and August, as these are the hottest months of the year.

If you’ve got more time to spend in Bahrain, here are additional things to consider adding to your Bahrain itinerary:

Meet the camels at the Royal Camel Farm: The royal family houses and cares for the camels. Visitors are welcome to come say hi.

Visit the Tree of Life: Growing in the middle of nowhere in an inhospitable climate, the tree is 400-years old.

Go Dune Bashing: Because of the surrounding desert, Bahrain is a great spot to go dune bashing in a 4×4 if you’re looking for adventure.

Take a day trip to Saudi Arabia: Take the King Fahad Causeway to explore nearby destinations such as Khobar, Damman, and the King Abdulaziz World Cultural Center.

Final Thoughts on A 24 Hours in Bahrain Itinerary

Bahrain was an unexpected treasure during my Middle East trip. Less glitzy than its neighbors, the small island country’s history and culture wowed me. If you’ve got the time and are in the area, I highly recommend visiting Bahrain.
