Helsinki Cathedral (Senate Square)

Checking out Helsinki Cathedral has long been one of the very best things to do in Helsinki. As a city known for its impressive range of architectural styles, it’s something you can’t miss while visiting the city.

Located in the heart of the city center in Senate Square, over 350,000 people visit the cathedral every single year. This makes it one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Finnish capital.

Constructed in the 19th Century, the cathedral was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel – a German architect famed for his works on several other buildings in the city, including the Old Clinic, the University of Helsinki, and many more.

In addition to admiring the impressive exterior, make sure you head inside to explore the beauty of the cathedral’s interior.

Uspenski Cathedral

Another prominent building in Helsinki is the Uspenski Cathedral. Standing in the city since 1868, the cathedral is over 155 years old. Overlooking the Finnish capital with a blend of Russian and Byzantine influences, the cathedral is a must-see for architecture enthusiasts. Furthermore, don’t miss the amazing views of Helsinki as you explore the grounds of Uspenski Cathedral.

Join an informative walking tour

Walking tours have always been one of the best ways to get to know a new city. They offer the chance to see the destination through the eyes of a local who will often share their insider tips. This gives you the opportunity to explore hidden gems that most tourists likely won’t be aware of.

In Helsinki, several walking tours on offer cover a range of topics and interests, such as:

●     Design District Walk: For the creative souls.

●     Finnish Food Walk: For the foodies.

●     Walking tour of Vanhakaupunki: See where Finland was founded back in 1550.

●     Free walking tours: Run by a number of companies, including Free Tours By Foot (this is the one I took).

The Baltic Sea still had a lot of ice – it was a nice complement to the Loyly saunas!

Relax in a sauna

Another one of the most popular things to do in Helsinki is to relax in a sauna. In fact, it’s a big part of Finnish culture, with approximately 3 MILLION saunas across the country. This means that it’s a must-do if you enjoy delving deep into the local way of living.

Boasting a unique wooden structure, Loyly is one of the most visited saunas in the city. After enjoying some relaxation, you can jump into the freezing sea to cool down (which is a known tradition). As well as a terrace where you can admire views of the city, Loyly also boasts a restaurant that serves traditional local dishes.

PRO TIP: Make reservations in advance, especially if you plan on visiting during the weekend. I saw several people turned away who did not have reservations.

Huvilakatu Street

If you enjoy colorful facades, make sure you take a walk down Huvilakatu Street. With homes painted in an array of different colors, it’s the most colorful street in the city. This makes it a spot well worthy of your Instagram feed.

Located just a short ten-minute walk away from Huvilakatu Street, the Design Museum is also worth checking out.

Allas Sea Pool

Allas Sea Pool is another place worth checking out if you’re in the mood for some much-needed rest and relaxation. Well-loved for its wellness facilities and restful environment, a ticket will grant you three hours of access to the pools and sauna.

If you’re peckish afterward, feel free to head to their onsite restaurant, where you can enjoy a section of delicious dishes in a gorgeous setting.

Market Square (Kaupattori)

As one of the top things to see, Market Square should not be missed while visiting Helsinki. Sitting in the middle of Market Square, you can find a number of market stalls selling traditional crafts, keepsakes, and fresh food. This makes a stroll around the market a fab way to delve deeper into local culture and get to know some residents.

Rock Church

Also known as Temppeliaukio Church, Helsinki’s famous rock church is worth visiting in the capital. Carved out of solid rock, this exceptional church is one of the city’s hidden gems. Developed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, the church runs services as well as live music concerts.

For those who want to check out the rock church, tickets cost just five euros and can be purchased both on-site and online in advance.

Finnish National History Museum

The Finnish Museum of Natural History is a must for history buffs. Throughout this popular Helsinki attraction, you’ll discover medieval jewels, Moomin exhibits, and framed prehistoric dinosaur bones.

In addition to its historical artifacts, the museum is home to a very photogenic staircase. The tiled flooring and grey chunky railings make for a great photo opportunity!

To truly appreciate everything the museum has to offer, you should aim to spend at least two hours there.

Sky Wheel, Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki Waterfront

Sky Wheel

Jump aboard the most intriguing Ferris wheel in the world. Situated right in the center of Helsinki, Sky Wheel was the very first Ferris wheel sauna.

Now, we know Finnish people love saunas, but this has got to be the most interesting concept there is. Imagine relaxing in a sauna while you’re 40 meters in the air overlooking views of the Nordic capital… How cool!

Atelijee Bar

If you fancy a rooftop drink with views over the city, make your way to Atelijee Bar. Located on the rooftop of Hotel Torni, it’s a particularly great spot to enjoy the sunset as you sip on your favorite cocktail. Although the drinks are on the pricier side at around €10, the amazing views (including views of Helsinki Cathedral) more than make up for it.

Sibelius Monument in Sibelius Park

Another must-see attraction is the Sibelius Monument. Designed by Eila Hiltunen and dedicated to the famed musician, the monument was crafted to symbolize the essence of Jean Sibelius’s work.

On windy days, the 600 steel pipes that stand tall above the park’s visitors prompt unique sound waves. This truly makes it a sculpture like no other and, without a doubt, one of the best free things to do in Helsinki.

Cafe Regatta

Just outside Sibelius Park, Cafe Regatta is one of the top Instagram spots in Helsinki. With its picture-perfect log cabin exterior and cozy atmosphere, you simply can’t visit the city without stopping by for a hot chocolate. Especially if you’re in the Finnish capital during its cold winter days! Known for its famed baked goods, it’s the ideal spot to rest your feet after a long day of sightseeing.

Explore Esplanade Park

Well-loved by both locals and visitors to the city, Esplanade Park is a lovely spot for a walk. It’s a popular spot to enjoy an atmospheric buzz and summer picnics in the sun, surrounded by greenery.

Art lovers will want to add the Finnish National Gallery to their Helsinki bucket list. Made up of three museums (Ateneum, Sinebrychoff, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma), you’ll find everything from sculptures to paintings. With a variety of artistic styles on display across the museums, there is something for every kind of art enthusiast.

With an emphasis on Finnish art, Ateneum Museum allows visitors to explore the creative history of this beautiful Nordic county. On the other hand, Sinebrychoff is known for its display of historical paintings by world-renowned artists such as Dutch painter Rembrandt.

Lastly, the Kiasma Gallery is a contemporary art museum offering a more modern and experimental approach to the art world. Here you’ll find interesting works by artists from across the globe, including installations, paintings, and multimedia displays.

Amos Rex

While we’re on the topic of art galleries, Amos Rex is another established museum worth visiting in the capital. In addition to its striking architecture, which seems to be the norm in the city, visiting the gallery is one of the most unique things to do in Helsinki.

What makes the underground museum so remarkable is its interactive exhibits which visitors rate highly. However, be aware that at €20, tickets are not the cheapest. You should also consider booking in advance as sometimes, the queues can be rather long.

Christmas Markets in Helsinki

If you’re in Helsinki during the festive period, you may also want to schedule in some time to explore the Christmas markets. Every year, travelers from far and wide descend upon Finland for a white Christmas. Known as one of the best countries to visit at this time of year, Helsinki is the perfect place to spend a few days before heading to Lapland.

Running throughout most of December in Senate Square, Helsinki’s Christmas Market is a must to enjoy some joyful charm in one of the most festive countries in the world. Alongside charming huts selling a range of products, you can also find food and drink stands serving a range of local dishes.

Helsinki’s Winter Garden

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Helsinki’s Winter Garden is another fun winter activity, but you’d be mistaken. The Winter Garden is a beautifully historic greenhouse that is completely free to visit.

Well-loved amongst local residents, the Winter Garden boasts an array of palms, cacti, plants, and flowers. If you’re visiting Helsinki on a budget, this place is a must-do. Although it provides a peaceful escape at any time of year, it’s especially stunning during summer as an ideal spot to surround yourself with greenery and enjoy a picnic.

If you’re creative, consider taking your camera, writing materials, or paints, as the Winter Garden is sure to boost your imagination.

Best Things to Do in Helsinki | The Common Traveler | image: stone walls of Sveaborg Fortress

Fortress at Sveaborg

A Unesco World Heritage Site, the Fortress of Suomenlinna is located outside of central Helsinki. To get there, your only option is to take the Kauppatori – Suomenlinna/Salutorget – Sveaborg ferry from the ferry port. Despite its location, the journey is well worth it to admire the beauty of this incredible fortress.

Bursting with history, the impressive fortification located off the coast of the Finnish capital was constructed in the 18th Century. During your visit to this unique open-air museum, you’ll discover more about the country’s past and enjoy amazing sights over the Baltic Sea.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Helsinki

The country that made hygge famous embodies the contentment feeling in various ways. Finns are the happiest outdoors, and you should take the opportunity to enjoy all of those. While some people only spend a day here, it is worth spending at least three days exploring this magnificent city and everything it offers.

In case you’re wondering about the temperatures, I visited towards the end of March, and there was still snow on the ground! But don’t let that deter you – it adds to the fun!
