Perfect Weekend Itinerary in Wicomico County, MD
Friday in Whitehaven, MD
Arrive at the historic Whitehaven Inn in Whitehaven, Maryland. The bed and breakfast is located directly on the Wicomico River’s shores, a Chesapeake Bay tributary. With eight themed rooms, everyone in your party can choose their favorite!
The original hotel building dates back to 1810 as a private home. In 1877, the building opened as a hotel after undergoing an expansion. The hotel was an important stopping point for merchants traveling along the river and continued to operate until the 1950s. The town became a relic of the past when after 1950, most businesses and the port became more prominent in nearby Salisbury.
After being abandoned and neglected for almost 50 years, the hotel was again revived and brought to its previous glory. Guests will find unique antiques throughout the hotel, including handwritten notes that date back to the late 1800s. Several albums show the history and changes of the hotel. The Innkeeper, Cindy, possesses a wealth of information about the history of this beautiful building.
Choose the Victorian for a romantic setting with a seating area with beautiful river views. The rooms have private baths, and the Victorian and Garden rooms both access a screened-in porch on the second floor.

Drive into Salisbury to spend your wonderful evening. Walk around downtown and do some shopping or peer into the windows as you build up your appetite.
Enjoy dinner at Mogan’s Oyster House in downtown Salisbury. This farm-to-table restaurant features some of the best the Eastern Shore offers. The ingredients are always fresh, meaning that the menu rotates frequently. Try the Mac and Cheese with shrimp, crab, and lobster if you can! The attentive waitstaff will take care of your needs and make recommendations – including bespoke cocktails.

Saturday in Salisbury, MD

- Are you foodies? Book the Heart of Salisbury Food Tour! In about five stops, you’ll learn about the history of local eateries and Downtown Salisbury. Led by a shore local, the anecdotes add to your food experience!
- Are you fans of Ghost Tours or the paranormal? Mindy Burgoyne, author of five books on the Eastern Shore, will craft a small group tour upon request. Her group has researched the area, adding authenticity to the stories. - Are you fans of afternoon tea? The Gillis Grier Bed and Breakfast in Salisbury hosts afternoon tea once a month. If you time your visit right, your group can reserve spots for a fun afternoon of learning about tea and the afternoon tea tradition. You can even get dressed up if you like!
- Are you wine lovers? Arrange in advance with the Whitehaven Inn to have a pontoon boat ride to the local winery – Bordeleau. At Bordeleau, you’ll hear live music while enjoying local vintage.
PRO TIP: If you want to go to Bordeleau via pontoon, you must make arrangements with the Whitehaven Hotel first.
- Are you beer lovers? While it is a small city, Salisbury has three phenomenal breweries. Take an Uber or Lyft into town and explore the various offerings at each of them!
- Lavender fans visiting in early summer can enjoy walking through the fields at Smokey Cat Lavender Farm and trying some locally-made lavender products.

Sunday Discovery in Wicomico County, MD

Borrow the Inn’s bicycles and explore the nearby historic Whitehaven. You’ll note that many of the homes have historical markers. Or borrow the Inn’s kayaks and paddle along the Wicomico River.
If the Whitehaven Ferry is running, you can ride the bikes to the opposite shore and explore some fun areas. The Whitehaven Ferry is the oldest continuously operating free ferry in the United States. It only takes a few minutes but could save you over 30 minutes of drive time home!
