Whether you’re on your way to the Maryland Shore or enjoying Wicomico County, one thing not to miss is Afternoon Tea at the Gillis Grier Bed & Breakfast in Salisbury. This charming Victorian house not only greets guests with Southern hospitality but also hosts a monthly Tea Time on the third Sunday of every month. Most afternoon tea offerings require a reservation.

Afternoon tea includes a variety of teas, desserts, sweets, sandwiches, and scones with freshly made clotted creams and jams. The tradition dates back to Victorian times when they did not consume dinner until 8 pm, so a light meal between lunch and dinner was necessary.

You’ve probably seen Afternoon Teas advertised at fancy hotels and historic establishments. If you’re like me, you may have been too intimidated to give it a try because you don’t want to appear gauche. Here are some simple questions and answers to break down this experience so that you can relax and enjoy it!

What should I wear to Afternoon Tea at Gillis Grier?

Afternoon tea is a special occasion, and you should feel free to dress up. You can opt to wear dressier clothes (like your Sunday best) or dress in traditional Victorian clothing. Have fun!

At Gillis Grier, fancy hats are available if you want to borrow one to wear during your afternoon tea.

Who can enjoy Afternoon Tea?

Both men and women can enjoy afternoon tea. Because of the set menu, afternoon tea is not recommended for children under 12 or picky eaters, or those with common food allergies (see below).

What should I expect from my Afternoon Tea at Gillis Grier in Salisbury?

Afternoon tea tides you over from lunch to dinner, a light snack. It is a relaxed experience where you enjoy the company of others and enjoy a light refreshment. Expect to sample a variety of teas and taste three types of foods: savories, scones, and sweets.

All foods are prepared to be consumed with just your fingers. If you have silverware at your table setting, remember to use utensils from the outside towards the inside. Once used, do not put your utensil back on the table; instead, rest it against your plate.

Are there rules about drinking the tea?

Hold teacups by the handles (and they’re tiny!), but no need to raise your pinkie! Do not move the saucer from its position.

Depending on the place, you may be able to sample a variety of teas. At Gillis Grier, the tea includes two cups of three different types of teas.

Though many prefer to use milk and sugar with black tea, only use them with black tea. If you use milk or sugar, use your teaspoon to fold the milk or sugar without making a noise, then place your spoon on the saucer while you drink your tea.

What if I have to use the restroom?

Politely excuse yourself from your table companions. Move your chair back, placing your napkin on your seat. Upon returning to the table, take your napkin off the chair, sit down, and replace the napkin on your lap.

How do I eat the food?

Eat the food in small bites. Sandwiches should be consumed in 2 or 3 bites. Split the scones into bite-size pieces. Apply cream or topping with a knife.

What if I have food allergies?

Contact the provider directly. If afternoon tea is being held at a large hotel, they may be able to accommodate both allergies and preferences. However, smaller, more intimate settings prepare one set menu.

If you have these concerns, contact the provider and discuss whether there is any way to make changes to accommodate these concerns well ahead of the event.

Can I have a private party?

Yes, many places will hold a private party for afternoon tea. At Gillier Grier B&B, private parties may be reserved for groups of 4 to 8 participants.

What was afternoon tea like at Gillis Grier in Salisbury?

We were welcomed by the hostess who was dressed in traditional Victorian clothing. Fancy hats were provided for us so we could feel like we fit in with the special atmosphere.

A three-tier tower featuring treats served as a centerpiece to our place setting. Over the next two hours, we tried two cups of three different kinds of tea. Munching over finger sandwiches and home-baked sweet treats, we were able to enjoy a relaxed and fun opportunity.

The owner of Gillis Grier learned how to bake so that she could create her own sweet treats. The lavender cupcake was flavored from lavender gathered nearby (check out lavender farms in Maryland!). A cute little teacup cookie sat atop the purple delight.

After enjoying a variety of savory sandwiches, several sweet bite-sized desserts, and a traditional scone, we left so full we hardly needed dinner!

Want to make a weekend out of it? Don’t forget that you can stay at the Gillis Grier Bed & Breakfast.

I’d like to thank Wicomico County for sponsoring my weekend in Salisbury and Wicomico County. As always, my posts are an accurate reflection of the experiences I had.
