Things to Do in Downtown Fredericksburg VA
Caroline Street
Caroline Street is a bustling and historic boulevard lined with well-preserved historic buildings in various architectural styles, such as Colonial, Federal, Victorian, and Georgian, located in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. It is known for its attractive setting, wide range of goods, and rich history, is a mesmerizing place that welcomes you to explore, shop, dine, and immerse yourself in local culture.
Wandering around Caroline Street is like stepping back in time, as the cobblestone sidewalks and well-preserved architecture exude a sense of the past. The street has many boutiques, specialized shops, art galleries, and antique stores. You can explore these shops for one-of-a-kind items, clothing, jewelry, artwork, and more!
Caroline Street also has various dining options, such as restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and diners serving a variety of cuisines. You’ll find something you like, whether you want a simple dinner or a sophisticated dining experience.
Caroline Street is well-known for its cultural attractions in addition to its shops and establishments. Historic attractions, museums, and landmarks are all within walking distance of the street. Caroline Street is also popular for community events, festivals, and gatherings. Whether it’s a loud street festival or a peaceful art display, there’s always something going on that adds to the street’s vibrant atmosphere.
Mary Washington House
President Washington’s mother, Mary Washington, spent most of her life in Fredericksburg, VA. President Washington purchased the house which he gifted to his mother. She spent the last 17 years of her life here.
In the Mary Washington House, docents relate tales of the first president’s family, including a focus on what life was like in the 1700s. Tours are offered throughout the day and are the best way to learn about this unique historic home.
Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop
The eighteenth-century building showcases a museum of medicine and pharmacy. Dressed in period garb, docents relate tales of what medical treatments were like back then. You’ll even get to see leeches – a favorite treatment back then!
This was the most entertaining museum we visited because it offers something of interest to all age groups!
Rising Sun Tavern Museum
Initially the home of Charles Washington, George’s youngest brother, the building was turned into a tavern in 1792. Taverns were important stopping points for travelers back then and served as the community’s center where ideas were exchanged. It’s a short walk from several nearby spots.
The building has been lovingly restored, and the inside decor is original. This was the most disappointing spot I visited as I expected a functioning place to eat. That’s what I get for not doing my research in advance!
Kenmore Plantation
The Georgian-style mansion belonging to Betty Washington Lewis, George’s sister, has been lovingly preserved as a museum. Learn all about the Washington family and how they contributed to the birth of a nation. After enjoying the guided tour, explore the beautiful gardens with a river view.
Trolley Tour
Embark on an immersive journey through history and charm with a Trolley Tour in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This guided tour offers a fun and educational exploration of the city’s most significant landmarks, all from the comfort of a charming trolley!

The Washingtons called it the Home Farm, but as people used a ferry to cross the Rappahannock River from the farm to Fredericksburg, it became known as Ferry Farm.

Chatham Manor
Chatham Manor is a historic mansion and estate with historical and architectural significance, notably in relation to the American Civil War. The home was initially owned by the Fitzhugh family and was built in the mid-18th century.
It was named after England’s Chatham Dockyard and has historical importance that spans through time. This grand estate played an important role during the American Civil War, functioning as a Union Army headquarters and a vital hospital.
The mansion’s strategic location overlooking the Rappahannock River proved essential during the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Over the years, Chatham Manor experienced changes in ownership and underwent numerous renovations, each chapter adding to its remarkable history.

Lovers of craft beer rejoice! In addition to various bars, the walkable downtown area includes craft breweries, a good option so you can walk back to your hotel after having a drink. Visit Red Dragon Brewery (on Princess Anne Street) to find delicious craft beer options. The Port Oysteria & Brewery is a unique concept featuring a raw seafood bar and craft beers brewed on-site!
Where to Eat in Downtown Fredericksburg VA
Cork and Table
If you’re looking for “refined food in an intimate, unpretentious setting,” then Cork and Table is your go-to destination. Chef James Fallon prides himself on pairing the perfect wine with your meal. Select from the optional three or four-course meals to remove the guesswork. To experience the best Chef Fallon offers, reserve a spot on his six-course Chef’s Tasting.
Foode
Whether you visit Foode to try their food or their bar, you’ll be greeted with seasonal ingredients celebrating local fare. Opt to visit Foode for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Try their Pimento Cheese Toast – featuring their spicy pimento cheese spread on thick cut French bread.
Juan More Taco
The name is as irresistible as the delicious tacos you can enjoy here! Starting as a food truck, the food at Juan More Taco was so popular that they opened a brick-and-mortar building. And while you’re here, try the margaritas – the mango margarita is outstanding!
Fork -N- Biscuit
Fans of brunch will enjoy this Carolina Street eatery – brunch is served all day! They’re open daily from 8 am to 3 pm, so you can sleep in late and still enjoy breakfast fare. The servings are extremely generous, so you’ll need a nap afterward. Do try their magnificent “breakfast” cocktails.
Sip and Stroll
On the first Friday of the month, visitors can enjoy a unique experience – sip and stroll! Purchase an alcoholic beverage at one of the participating merchants, and you can walk around with it in the designated areas of downtown. Sip and Stroll occurs simultaneously with the First Friday art walks, so it’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy the various art displays.
Fredericksburg XPass
If you plan to visit many historic locations, you’ll want to explore whether the Fredericksburg XPass is worth purchasing. If you plan on visiting the Fredericksburg Museums of the Mary Washington House, Hugh Mercer Apothecary, Rising Sun Tavern, and St. James House, it is probably worth it unless you fall into a special discount category (AAA, Senior, Military).
Where to Stay in Downtown Fredericksburg VA
Luxury: The Richard Johnston Inn & 1890 Caroline House is the only 5-star property in town. The Victorian-style bed and breakfast is perfectly situated close to all the historic sites. Guests love the daily breakfast!
Mid-range: Courtyard Fredericksburg Historic District is the perfect location for those of us Marriott loyalists. Located across the street from the Visitor’s Center and the starting point for the Trolley, you can walk anywhere from here. This was where I stayed.
Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Downtown Fredericksburg VA
I loved spending the weekend in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The downtown was easily walkable – something that I prefer! History lovers will enjoy learning about the city’s rich heritage. But the charming downtown offers lots of shopping and foodie options, too. It’s a perfect destination for a weekend getaway along the East Coast. If you’re driving from Washington DC, downtown Fredericksburg makes for a great day trip!
