Known as the “Queen of Pearls,” the Ohrid Pearl is a unique type of imitation pearl produced in the town of Ohrid located on the shores of lake Ohrid for over a century. Made from the scales of local fish found in one of the world’s deepest lakes, the Ohrid pearls are handcrafted and polished to perfection, creating a beautiful and lustrous gem treasured by locals and visitors alike.

5. Filigree Jewelry
Filigree is a traditional Macedonian craft that involves delicately weaving fine threads of gold or silver into intricate designs. Filigree jewelry, such as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, is a popular souvenir choice for visitors looking to bring home a piece of Macedonian craftsmanship. These timeless pieces make for elegant and meaningful gifts.
If filigree jewelry is too delicate for you (or maybe I’m just a bit too rough!), then opt for filigree artwork – it’s one of the most unique souvenirs you’ll bring back.
6. Ajvar
Ajvar is a delicious red pepper and eggplant relish that is a staple in Macedonian cuisine. Made from roasted peppers, garlic, and olive oil, it is a flavorful condiment that can be enjoyed with bread, cheese, or meat. Jars of ajvar are available in local markets and grocery stores, making it a tasty and practical souvenir to take home.
Move over, ketchup! There’s a new condiment in town, and it’s so delicious that you’ll be putting it on everything from eggs to ice cream (okay, maybe not ice cream, but you get the idea). Ajvar is one of the most popular souvenir items in this area, and it can be purchased in supermarkets.
7. Lokum
North Macedonia has its own delightful version of Turkish delight, known as lokum. This confectionery, similar to its Turkish counterpart, is a chewy, sweet treat made from sugar, starch, and various flavorings. It can be flavored with fresh fruits or even nuts.
In North Macedonia, offering lokum to guests is seen as a gesture of hospitality. It’s common to serve it with coffee or tea, enhancing the social experience.
North Macedonia’s lokum is more than just a sweet treat; it embodies the country’s rich culinary traditions and hospitality. Whether enjoyed as a snack or a dessert, it provides a delicious taste of the region’s culture. The perfect place to buy lokum is in Skopje’s Old Bazaar.
8. Honey and Honey Products
North Macedonia is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it an ideal location for beekeeping. Macedonian honey is renowned for its quality and flavor, with varieties such as chestnut, acacia, and wildflower honey being popular choices. You can also find honey products such as beeswax candles and propolis tinctures that make for unique and natural souvenirs.
Bee-lieve me, Macedonian honey is the bee’s knees. Sweet, delicious, and the perfect gift for that friend who’s always buzzing around.
9. Hand-carved Wood Products
Wood carving is a traditional craft in North Macedonia, with artisans creating intricate designs on items such as furniture, utensils, and decorative objects. Hand-carved wooden souvenirs make unique and rustic keepsakes that showcase the skill and artistry of Macedonian craftsmen.
Do you need a new spoon? Why settle for a boring old plastic one when you can scoop your way to happiness with a hand-carved wooden masterpiece straight from North Macedonia?
10. Wine and Rakija
North Macedonia has a burgeoning wine industry, producing high-quality wines from local grape varieties such as Vranec and Smederevka. Wine production in the area is growing in international reputation. Rakija, a strong fruit brandy, is also popular in the region. Bringing home a bottle of Macedonian wine or rakija is a great way to savor the flavors of the country long after your trip has ended.
It’s a good idea to be aware of any alcohol limits that you can bring back home before you buy too much.
Forget souvenir shot glasses – bring back a bottle of Macedonian wine or rakija and let the party begin! Just be sure to have some ajvar on hand for those late-night snack cravings.
Where to Buy the Best North Macedonia Souvenirs
If you’re in Skopje, the best spot to buy your North Macedonia souvenirs is the Old Bazaar which has survived since ancient times. You’ll find lots of souvenir shops selling anything you’re looking for at affordable prices! In addition to being a popular tourist attraction, the Old Bazaar is a good place to find smaller shops full of locally-made souvenirs.
While the Skopje City Mall is a great place to buy famous brands, exchange currency, Sim card, and offers a cheap food court, it isn’t great for buying locally-made products (other than in the supermarket).
If you’re in Ohrid Old Town, you’ll find skilled artisans selling their pearls for reasonable prices. Keep in mind that credit cards will not be accepted in all places, so carry enough cash to buy the best things North Macedonia offers.
There were not a lot of street vendors around when I visited in early April but that may be different during the more popular summer months.
Worst case scenario, you can buy a few items at the duty-free shops at the Skopje International Airport on your way home.
