Immerse yourself in the area’s rich history and culture as you admire the traditional adobe architecture that gives the neighborhood its distinctive charm. This is where you will find the oldest buildings in town.
Take your time to browse various shops offering everything from handmade jewelry to local artwork and souvenirs. And, of course, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the iconic San Felipe de Neri Church, a historic landmark dating back to the 18th century, and admire its beautiful Spanish colonial architecture.

Once at the top, immerse yourself in the area’s natural beauty, which includes a variety of hiking paths suitable for all skill levels. After working up an appetite, indulge in a delicious meal at one of the summit’s dining options, all while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
PRO TIP: You need to reserve tickets in advance. If you want to ride the tramway and hike, the recommendation is to hike up (I know!) and ride the tramway down – this will save your knees!
Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride
Albuquerque is known as the “Hot Air Ballooning Capital of the World,” so don’t miss the opportunity to soar above the Rio Grande Valley and witness the stunning sunrise or sunset views!
As you soar into the sky, feel the rush of adventure and the soothing embrace of the morning air. Below, the sprawling views expand, revealing the beauty of the desert environment, the meandering Rio Grande River, and the breathtaking Sandia Mountains.
Guided by experienced pilots passionate about ballooning, you’ll gain a unique perspective of Albuquerque’s natural beauty and experience the serene tranquility of floating high above the earth.
If, like me, you’re unsure about getting up in the air in one of these, you can learn and admire them at the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum.

If you are in Albuquerque around October, you should take advantage of the incredible experience at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta! Savor the culinary traditions passed down through the ages, with each bite a testament to the rich culinary heritage of the Pueblo communities.
PRO TIP: Don’t skip the Indian Pueblo Kitchen! This was the most affordable and delicious meal that I had in Albuquerque, including beers from Bow & Arrow Brewing.
Hike Petroglyph National Monument
Travel back in time and culture at the Petroglyph National Monument, an archaeological treasure in Albuquerque’s Boca Negra Canyon. Here, amidst the volcanic terrain, you’ll discover a remarkable collection of petroglyphs—ancient rock carvings etched into the desert cliffs by Native American and Spanish settlers thousands of years ago.
As you explore the park’s network of hiking paths, you’ll learn about the intricate patterns’ rich history and cultural importance. Marvel at the detailed patterns, symbols, and figures that cover the volcanic rock. Each petroglyph provides insight into the lives, beliefs, and customs of people who formerly lived here.
Throughout your journey, look for interpretive signs and guided tours that explain the meaning and value of these ancient artworks. Each petroglyph, which depicts animals and celestial bodies and images of everyday life and sacred rituals, reveals a story that must be interpreted.
Visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History
Explore the world of nuclear science and history at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History just outside Albuquerque. This renowned institution offers an in-depth look at atomic energy, Cold War artifacts, and interactive displays that highlight the complexities and significance of nuclear technology.
Step inside for an immersive journey via the museum’s numerous displays, which depict the progression of nuclear physics from its origins to the present day. There are also interactive displays that offer hands-on learning opportunities for visitors of all ages, such as simulated reactor controls and interactive exhibitions on radiation detection.
Discover the ABQ BioPark
Some cities have botanical gardens, and some have zoos. The Albuquerque BioPark combines these and so much more in its ABQ BioPark.
The Botanic Garden is a great place for selfies. If you’re looking to learn about the flora of the American Southwest, it’s also the place to be. This botanical garden should not be missed.
The BioPark has an aquarium and a zoo, both promoting conservation efforts. They’re American Humane Certified for their excellent treatment of animals.

Located in the heart of the North Valley, Casa Rondeña Winery offers a beautiful setting with its historic adobe estate surrounded by vineyards. Check out the Local Breweries
New Mexico is home to a strong craft brewery and beverage scene. Yes indeed, in New Mexico, the same license is used for both fermenting beer and distilled spirits. This means that visitors to the breweries can enjoy a variety of adult beverages in the same location.
Marble Brewery offers three taprooms in Albuquerque, each with its own feel and atmosphere. One of their most popular offerings is Cerveza, a Mexican-style lager. It is light and refreshing—perfect for a hot summer day!
Don’t miss a visit to a New Mexico institution, Bosque Brewing. In addition to offering seasonal favorites and an expansive drink list, Bosque serves delicious food at various outlets. There’s nothing quite like a delicious cold brew with a slice of pizza at Restoration Pizza.
PRO TIP: Don’t be afraid to try seasonal and specialty beers. Bosque’s Pie-Faced was an unexpected treasure!
Sample New Mexican Cuisine
You can’t visit Albuquerque without sampling some delicious New Mexican cuisine. You’ll be asked whether you want green or red chile sauce when ordering at the local restaurants. Try them both, though my personal favorite was the green chile sauce.
One of the easiest ways to do this is to sample one of the famous breakfast burritos. After choosing your favorite stuffing, it will come smothered with a delicious hatch chile sauce. Yum! The Flying Star Cafe is the perfect place to give this a try.
For a wide variety of New Mexican cuisine options, visit Sadie’s, a local favorite with affordable menu offerings. And no, I’m not getting a kickback for this – it’s just delicious food!
If you’re looking for locations with a variety of foods, visit Tin Can Alley or Sawmill Market!
Drive on Historic Route 66
Established in 1926, Route 66 was one of the first numbered highways in the United States. The road connects Chicago to Los Angeles, and passes through amazing cities, including Albuquerque.
Driving along Route 66 in Albuquerque, visitors will see vintage motels and many eateries. Sadly, the road is in need of preservation and efforts are underway to protect this historic route.
Due to its popularity, as mentioned in books and songs, the road has been immortalized as part of American lore. Historic Route 66 is still driveable through Albuquerque, so enjoy riding on a piece of history.
